How Pokémon FireRed Explains Timeless Fitness Basics
In December, I found my childhood Game Boy SP—untouched for over a decade.
I charged it, turned it on… and it still worked like a dream. The startup chime, the dim screen glow, the click of the buttons—all of it hit me with a wave of nostalgia.
But as I sat there replaying one of my old favourites, I realised something that applies just as much to fitness as it does to gaming:
The classics always work.
My first thought was to fire up Pokémon Yellow, Ruby, or FireRed. I wanted something familiar yet fresh, and FireRed felt like the perfect mix of both.
I built a team that made my younger self proud: Arcanine, Snorlax (of course), Nidoqueen, Blastoise, Raichu, and Primeape. I’ve made it all the way to the Elite Four, and man—it’s just as fun as I remembered.
What really struck me, though, was how well the game still holds up. No patches. No updates. No fancy graphics. No nonsense DLCs. Just pure, timeless gameplay. And that’s exactly how fitness works.
People today are obsessed with what’s new—the latest diet, supplement, “hack,” or training trend. But the truth? The fundamentals have remained unchanged for decades. They still work. They always will.
Eating mostly whole foods. Lifting progressively. Sleeping well. Walking more. Staying consistent.
It’s not flashy. It’s not new. But like Pokémon FireRed, the classics always deliver. You don’t need the latest program or the perfect routine. You just need to master the basics—and keep playing the long game.
Because whether it’s Pokémon or progress, the same rule applies:
The foundations don’t stop working. People just stop doing them.
If you’re ready to get back to the basics, my free workout plan will show you exactly how to structure your training—so you can make progress without overcomplicating a thing.
